Ken Clarke all too often reminds us how legal aid costs all £39 per year. Here's what he's not so keen to tell you...The Ministry of Justice has chosen to make legal aid cuts of up to £350 million a year by 2015; - it will be done by savagely swinging the axe on social welfare law. Many advice agencies and CAB who rely on the funding will have to close as a result.
The Ministry of Justice bill costs each person in the UK £175 per year (2009/2010). This pays the justice bill of around £9.7 billion pounds;- most of which goes on Courts, Tribunals and prisons. Government hopes to reduce the justice bill by £2 billion pounds a year by 2015, but there is no guarantee they will.
The Justice bill varies enormously according to where you live. It's most expensive in London at £285 a year in London and it's cheapest in the East of England at £115 (2010/2011).
