Nick Clegg shameful attack.....
You can tell he'll stand shoulder to shoulder with the Conservatives in reversing the beneficial amendments made in the House of Lords for cancer sufferers!
Clegg makes no secret of his desire to side with the Conservatives when it comes to welfare reform. He promises to listen to the Lords after last night's crushing defeat of three key components of Government's welfare reforms; - I'd be surprised if it went beyond a mere act of pretending to care.
No sooner was the main voting over yesterday evening and Lord Freud (steering welfare reform though the Lords for the coalition) was trying to pull a fast one by reversing the amendments which had only shortly beforehand been voted through. Clegg's words should worry us all as it's a very strong indicator over how Government simply isn't listening to the more compassionate House of Lords. It's simply ludicrous if Government is simply going to refuse to follow a time honoured democratic process whereby bills going through both the House of Commons and the House of Lords before being enacted into in to legislation; - if Government is simply just going to ensure it gets what it wants by an act of reversal in the Commons.
Government minister Chris Grayling has already pledged to overturn the amendments voted for by the Lords last night. Shortly after the votes came through (but before Lord Freud pulled his dishonorable stunt by asking for further changes in the House of Lords by waiting until almost everyone in opposition had gone home) I posted on Mylegal on how the voted for amended changes would cause a financial headache for government in having to recalculate their estimated savings on the reforms; - this Government would rather pay private contractors than look after the most vulnearble . Clegg laughably claims to want to protect the vulnerable, how on earth he can claim a clear conscience is beyond me as he'll know very well that one of the amendments he wants to defeat is for the protection of those affected by cancer; - he goes on to rely on what I call the 'Beveridge defence'. He mistakenly seeks to defends his appalling attack on the most vulnerable of all by saying the current welfare reforms are not what Beveridge would have intended.
Clegg needs reminding that we are now in 2012 and I'm sure had Beverage been alive today, he would almost certainly have wanted to see welfare reforms protect cancer sufferers at any cost; - shame on you Clegg, you're an utter disgrace!
