National Autistic Society celebrates 50th Birthday in 2012!
The National Autistic Society is the UK's leading charity for people affected by autism.
We have 20,000 members, more than 100 branches, and provide information, advice and specialist services to 100,000 people living with autism every year.
We were founded in 1962 by a group of parents who were passionate about ensuring a better future for their children. In 2012 we will celebrate our 50th birthday. We, and the knowledge and understanding of autism, have grown hand in hand over the last 50 years.
At our inception, the term 'autism' was virtually unknown among the general population. Incredible as it now seems, children with autism were labelled 'psychotic' and 'sub-normal'. 'Cold', 'intellectual' parenting was blamed for the condition and the term 'refrigerator mother was born, blighting families everywhere. Getting a diagnosis was only the first of many hurdles parents faced, and those with children deemed 'uneducable' were confronted with the horror of the institution.
The National Autistic Society has launched new telephone numbers for the following services:
Education Rights Service: 0808 800 4102
Autism Helpline: 0808 800 4104
Parent-to-Parent Service: 0808 800 4106
Calls to these numbers are free from landlines and most mobiles.
This is an important development as it will support more people to access the information, advice and support that they need; one in seven calls to our Autism Helpline are now from mobile phones. The new numbers also offer enhanced confidentiality as the mobile networks will not itemise calls to these numbers on bills.

I do hope Mr Cameron will be as supportive of this excellent charity and its cause as he was back in 2009, read more...
