Does your AGM look something like this?

Then for goodness sake, put some spark into it!
It's usually at this time of year that many CAB and other charitable organisations hold their annual general meetings; and so it was that we all met up at the Seven Stars hotel in Totnes earlier today at 4.00 pm for our 'inaugural' event.
If I'm honest, many of our previous AGM's have been, well frankly a bit dull; it's just not the easiest of events to get off the ground and usually wild horses wouldn't drag people in off the streets to fill all the empty seats.
All charitable organisations have to hold an annual general meeting of some sorts, it's when board members and trustees are nominated and elected as are various motions which need to be built in to the agenda; accounts also have to be made available for public scrutiny. This part of the meeting is interesting to those who know what it's all about but unless you like watching the odd hand fly up in the air and enjoy listening to the words 'proposed' and 'seconded'; you'll probably be itching to get home and have some tea. AGM's can sometimes turn into a long list of apologies and an over enthusiastic provision of chairs in large halls which echo with emptiness rather than buzz with applause.
But I'm pleased to say that the AGM of the CAB who I work for was positively fantastic.
The Seven Stars hotel has to thanked for allowing the free use of their splendid newly refurbished meeting room, they've been very kind to us over the years and are to be commended for their support of their community.
Here's a link to their website if ever you need somewhere nice to stay in Totnes or want something really nice to eat, not forgetting those that like the odd drink or two. It's a really good place, very much a focal point for those who like to wine and dine in Totnes.

Huge praise has to go to the manager Emma Handley of South Hams Citizens Advice Bureau for organising the event so well and for producing a really excellent annual report, it's well worth a read and can be downloaded here..

The meeting was really well attended by paid and voluntary staff from the Bureau as well as our management committee, board members, the public and representatives from local parish councils and one of our major core service funders; - South Hams District Council. The meeting was opened by our managing chair Liz Owen who announced that she was standing down and handing over to our new chair XXXXXX.
Presentations were given by the following speakers:
Emma Handley - Bureau Manager - 'Behind the Curtains'
Nick Dilworth - Bureau Legal Services - 'Legal Aid Cuts/Welfare Reform'
