During an interesting appearance on the Andy Marr politics show this morning, Andy Marr quizzed Ken Clarke mainly on human rights and the rehabilitation of offenders; - a discussion which extended to giving prisoners the right to vote.
One of the questions posed was over how people are up in arms over taking away the right of vulnerable people in disputing decisions on their entitlement to state benefits.
I'm not sure Ken understood the question or whether he decided to put a bit of gloss on it; his response was to blame it on a bit of 'right wing media' - the inference being it was being misrepresented. On welfare reform he more of less said it was down to Iain Duncan Smith to sort it out.
I genuinely think that somewhere within Ken Clarke he has a genuine perception of the importance of justice for those affected by social welfare - it's just a shame he doesn't seem to understand the reality of how we deal with it in the social welfare sector.
