Seemingly anyone commenting negatively on the proposed legal aid reforms can't do so objectively - Well that's according to Conservative Vale of Glamorgan MP Alun Cairns who backs the reforms. He said: "Of course, some of these strongest opponents come from the legal profession whose incomes depend on the money that comes from legal aid so I hardly think they're the most objective people. "There's a significant amount of waste and a significant amount of expenditure that could be drawn from elsewhere." It seems hard to understand Mr Cairns stance when he promotes the following on his website: "The review of the HCMS Estate which included Courthouse closures and mergers of Local Justice Areas has highlighted that the Vale Magistrates Court is being considered for closure. Whilst I welcome the Consultation, my concern is that the full implications of the proposed Courthouse closure in Barry have been thought through. I strongly oppose the closure of the Magistrates Court as it will deny cost effective justice to local people. " How can anyone possibly oppose court closure and express concern over access to justice at local level - whilst backing these reforms?Are these people for real, do they not know what a dedicated lot we are? - A dedication not matched to vastly inflated salaries I hasten to add.
