Happy New Year to you all!
Yes it’s that time of year already, you know the time when you can’t face another sandwich stuffed with turkey remnants, when thoughts turn to working out what day the decorations need to come down, when the postman bears bills rather than gifts; and when some of us start to make well intentioned resolutions which we dutifully (and perhaps rather stupidly!) vow to keep to.
So what’s it going to be then?
Give up the cigarettes?
Cut out the alcohol?
Walk, rather than drive, to work?
Finish all those jobs around the house you started years ago?
Start one of those slimming classes and keep off the pounds forever more?
Well to those who have the will power to succeed, good luck; all credit to you!
But to all of you there is a serious resolution which you can make, why not do so right now, right here; it affects all of those who hit these pages on Ilegal and Mylegal; it also affects many outside of these forum walls. As a captive audience, why not resolve right now to do your bit to preserve a Legal Aid system which is in sure fire danger of becoming extinct?
As we recover from our New Year hang-overs, you can be pretty certain that elsewhere lurks some suitably sober, non smoking, cycle riding, slimbo politician, who is probably hot footing it down to a dark office in Westminster on a mission to make Legal Aid a thing of the past. The problem is that a lot of these politicians just don’t know what it is we do, without a doubt some just don’t care.
To be fair though, are we doing all we can to make our case known? Most of us are too busy helping our clients to stop and boast of our achievements, but we really do need to shout loudly on this one. To all of these politicians currently deciding our fate, all we are to them is a £350M bill which needs to be saved in the interests of ‘the Nation’. We need to explain why Legal Aid is money well spent; much of our good work does a lot to avert disasters, it’s up to us to state our case to show how we save the State.
So make it a resolution to join the campaigns posted on Ilegal & Mylegal and elsewhere, collectively we have a mighty strong voice, but no one will listen if we don’t speak now and ensure we get heard. We’ve got a good case against these drastic and hard hitting reforms, many of you will have good ideas; some of you can tell us how Legal Aid saved you from some kind of disaster. The reform clock is ticking; the Ministry of Justice consultation closing date is not too far ahead now. Make it a resolution to do your bit to save Legal Aid!
